About the Department of Speech and Language Therapy

The profession of Speech and Language Therapy was officially recognized on April 26, 2011, under Law No. 6225 titled “Law on Amendments to Certain Laws and Statutory Decrees,” which was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Türkiye and entered into force on the same date.
Speech and Language Therapy is an independent and multidisciplinary healthcare field that integrates various disciplines such as biomedical sciences (anatomy, physiology, neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, otolaryngology, genetics, physical therapy and rehabilitation, audiology), clinical linguistics (phonetics, phonology, acoustics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics), psychology, cognitive neuropsychology, and special education. This profession is legally defined as a healthcare profession in Türkiye.
The primary aim of our Department is to train competent, ethical, scientifically grounded, and well-equipped Speech and Language Therapists in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders. Our graduates work with individuals in a wide range of areas, including speech sound disorders, articulation and phonological disorders, fluency disorders (such as stuttering and cluttering), motor speech disorders (apraxia, dysarthria), developmental or acquired language disorders, voice disorders, swallowing difficulties, and learning disabilities.
Speech and Language Therapy stands out as one of the most promising professions in terms of employment, both in Türkiye and globally. According to the 2024 data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), graduates of Speech and Language Therapy have a registered employment rate of 91.9%, making it one of the top fields with the highest employment rates. Moreover, graduates find employment in an average of just 2.2 months, indicating a rapid transition into the workforce within the healthcare sector. These figures highlight that the profession offers not only academic depth but also strong career prospects.
The Department of Speech and Language Therapy at Tarsus University, Faculty of Health Sciences, offers high-quality education with a strong academic staff and a curriculum shaped by current scientific approaches. In addition to compulsory and elective theoretical courses, practical clinical training is given significant emphasis. During the later stages of their education, students gain hands-on experience by working directly with real clients.
